The first thing that might catch your eye about the Dog House Drive In is the big neon sign that tops the building’s exterior. While it is fun to see during the day, at night the sign lights up to say DOG HOUSE and features a dachshund doggy consuming a string of sausages. The lights fluctuate, making the wiener dog’s tail wag up and the sausages look like a never-ending feast.
Though your friendly neighborhood blogger rarely succumbs to the wiles of any chile ameliorated with cumin, the Dog House’s chili has an addictive alchemy that has ensnared my affections. Rather than repel me with its odorant qualities, the cumin-laced fragrance wafting toward me makes my mouth water. Thankfully the well-practiced cooks construct and serve hot dogs faster than the babysitter’s boyfriend when the car pulls up. Yes, it’s a weirdly addictive chili with enough heat to frighten most Texans. They’re the antithesis of the plump behemoths you can’t fit into your mouth unless you’re a politician. The Dog House uses sweet bready buns that help temper any piquant qualities the chili might have.

If COVID has had a chilling effect on the local restaurant business, you wouldn't know it from the lunch scene at the Dog House Drive In on Central. There were at least 20 cars in the small parking lot throughout the hour I was there. Two servers handled the situation with aplomb, lugging drinks and bags of food out to cars and then stopping to take orders from the new arrivals.
